Appliance Clearances: The Spec-Sheet Numbers That Kill Layouts
The most expensive words in a kitchen renovation are "we'll figure out the appliances later." Cabinetry is cut to a thousandth of an inch in our plants. Appliances are manufactured to their own tolerances and their own opinions about how much air they need behind them. When those two things meet on site and disagree, somebody pays — and it's rarely the appliance manufacturer.
This is the checklist we run before any drawing goes to production. If you're planning a kitchen, run it too.
The rule: model numbers before drawings
Not brands. Not categories. Model numbers. A 36-inch French-door refrigerator from one manufacturer needs a 36 1/4-inch opening; another needs 36 3/4 plus 1/2-inch air gaps at the sides and 1 inch at the top. A "24-inch" dishwasher can be 23 5/8 or 23 7/8. Those fractions are the difference between a flush install and a return trip.
Every manufacturer publishes an installation manual and a cut sheet with a rough-opening diagram. Get them, put them in a folder, and give them to your cabinetmaker with the plan. We ask for this at the design stage, and we won't release drawings for production without it — because a cabinet built to the wrong opening is a remake at somebody's cost, and 8 to 12 weeks of production time.
Refrigerators: the biggest source of trouble
Three numbers matter and two of them aren't the width.
Depth. "Counter-depth" means the cabinet box is roughly 24 to 25 inches; with doors and handles the unit is typically 28 to 30 inches deep, so it will still project past a 25-inch counter. Standard-depth units run 32 to 36 inches deep including doors and project 7 to 11 inches. Fully integrated units fit a 24-inch cabinet opening and finish flush, at a considerable price. Know which you have before the surround is designed.
Hinge-side clearance. A French-door unit needs the door to swing past 90 degrees before the interior drawers will pull out. Most require 2 to 3 inches of clearance beyond the appliance on the hinge side, and a fridge tight against a wall is a fridge whose crisper drawer won't open. Solve it with a filler or by pulling the whole surround off the wall.
Air clearance. Typically 1/2 inch at the sides, 1 inch at the top and 2 inches at the back, though built-in units vent through the front grille and can sit tight. Compressor heat has to go somewhere; box a fridge in without clearance and you shorten its life.
Also confirm the water line location, the receptacle position (usually specified in a zone at the back), and whether the doors need to be removed to get the unit through your door frames — a common problem in apartment kitchens.
Ranges and cooktops
- Slide-in vs freestanding. A slide-in range overlaps the counter on both sides and needs a cabinet opening typically 30 1/8 to 30 1/4 inches for a "30-inch" unit, with the counter cut to match. A freestanding range needs the full 30 inches plus 1/8 tolerance and has finished sides. They are not interchangeable at the drawing stage.
- Side clearance to combustibles. Most ranges require a minimum distance from a side wall or a tall cabinet — commonly 6 inches to an adjacent combustible surface above the cooking surface height, sometimes more for pro-style units. Pro ranges with high BTU output often require a non-combustible spacer or a specific side panel.
- Height to the cabinet above. 30 inches from cooking surface to an unprotected cabinet bottom is the standard requirement. A listed hood can be closer, per its own manual.
- Cooktops need a specified cutout, plus a minimum clearance below to a drawer or oven top — typically 1 to 5 inches. This is the number that kills the "deep drawer under the cooktop" plan, and it varies by model. Induction units also need ventilation clearance for their electronics.
- Anti-tip brackets are required on freestanding ranges and must be installed to the floor or the rear wall. Plan the flooring sequence accordingly.
Hoods
Two dimensions. Mounting height is typically 30 to 36 inches above the cooking surface for a wall hood — too low and you hit your head or violate the manual; too high and capture collapses. Projection matters as much: a hood should be at least as deep as the front burner centreline, which for a 24-inch-deep cooktop means a 24 to 27-inch hood. And the duct: a 900 CFM hood needs 8 to 10-inch round duct with minimal elbows, and that route has to exist inside your ceiling or wall. Find the route before you buy the hood. Dishwashers, ovens and the rest
Dishwashers: 24-inch nominal, needing a 24 to 24 1/8-inch opening, 34 to 34 1/2 inches of height under the counter (adjustable feet give you range), and 25 inches of depth so the hoses aren't crushed. Critically, the door must clear anything adjacent — at an inside corner you need 2 to 3 inches of filler or the door strikes the perpendicular run. Panel-ready models have a maximum panel weight, usually 15 to 25 lbs; a solid wood panel on a big door can exceed it and the door will sag. Check the spec.
Wall ovens: cutout dimensions vary far more than the nominal size suggests — a "30-inch" oven might want a 28 1/2-inch-wide by 28 1/4-inch-high cutout, and the depth requirement is often 24 inches plus a rear ventilation gap. Double ovens need a specific cutout height and a support platform rated for 200 to 350 lbs. Never build an oven cabinet from a category assumption.
Undercounter refrigeration and wine units: almost all vent through the front grille, which means the toe area must remain open — you cannot run a continuous plinth across the face. Get this on the elevation.
Warming drawers, coffee systems, steam ovens: each has a plumbing or electrical requirement and a specific niche. Steam ovens often need a water line or a plumbed reservoir.
Panel-ready: where tolerances get tight
Integrated appliances are where a millimetre matters. The manufacturer supplies a panel template with exact dimensions, the location and type of fasteners, and a maximum weight. Reveal lines — the gaps between the appliance panel and adjacent doors — must match the rest of your kitchen, usually 3 mm to 1/8 inch, and getting an appliance panel to align with the drawer fronts on either side is genuine precision work.

The sequence that prevents disasters
- Choose appliances and record model numbers before cabinetry design is finalized.
- Collect every installation manual and cut sheet. Give copies to the cabinetmaker, the electrician, the plumber and the HVAC contractor.
- Have the cabinetmaker mark every rough opening, clearance and utility location on the shop drawings, and check them yourself against the manuals.
- Confirm delivery access — door widths, elevator dimensions, stair turns — for anything over 33 inches wide.
- Do not substitute appliances after drawings are approved without re-checking. A "same size" swap is frequently not.
