Appliance Garages: Clear Counters Without Losing Access

Every kitchen has a countertop appliance problem. The toaster, the kettle, the coffee machine, the blender, the stand mixer — six objects that get used daily and look like a small appliance showroom the rest of the time. The appliance garage is the cabinetmaker's answer: a purpose-built cavity where those things live, plugged in, at counter height, behind a door that disappears. Done well it's one of the most-used square feet in a kitchen. Done badly it's an expensive cupboard nobody opens twice.

The difference is almost entirely in the dimensions and the door.

Measure your machines before you draw anything

This is not optional and it is where most appliance garages fail. Go to your counter with a tape measure and write down height, width and depth of every appliance you intend to keep in there — and the operating clearance. A toaster needs 3 to 4 inches above for the lever and the bread. An espresso machine with a top-fill tank needs 5 to 8 inches of lid clearance. A kettle spits steam. A stand mixer tilts back and needs 5 inches of head room to raise the head.

The dimensions we build to most often:

  • Interior height: 17 to 20 inches for a standard garage holding a coffee maker and toaster. That means the cabinet occupies almost the full 18-inch backsplash zone between counter and uppers.
  • Interior height: 24 to 30 inches if a tall espresso machine or a stand mixer lives there, which requires stealing height from the upper cabinet above.
  • Interior depth: 15 to 18 inches. Standard 12-inch uppers are too shallow for most machines. Fifteen inches is the practical minimum; 18 lets a coffee machine sit with room to open a portafilter.
  • Interior width: 24 to 42 inches. Under 24 you can fit one machine. A 36-inch garage comfortably holds a coffee setup plus a toaster.

The door mechanism decides whether it gets used

A garage you have to open, hold, and work around will sit closed with everything on the counter instead. Four mechanisms, ranked by how well they perform in real kitchens:

1. Bi-fold lift-up (Blum Aventos HF and equivalents). Two horizontal panels fold up and out of the way, holding position anywhere. Best in class for a garage under an upper cabinet. Hardware runs $250 to $450 per unit and needs the cabinet engineered for the lift arms, so it must be designed in, not added later.

2. Pocket doors (flipper doors). Doors swing open and slide back into the cabinet sides. Fully disappearing, excellent for a wide garage, and the traditional "appliance garage" solution. The mechanism eats 2 to 3 inches of interior width per side — plan for it. Hardware $200 to $400.

3. Tambour. The roll-top. Charming, period-appropriate in a traditional kitchen, and mechanically the fussiest: the slats collect crumbs, the roll consumes 8 to 10 inches of depth behind the opening, and they eventually get sticky. I build them when a client loves them, with the caveat spoken out loud.

4. Plain hinged doors. Cheapest, and fine for a garage you access a few times a day, but the open doors project into the counter and into your face when you're standing at the machine. Acceptable at the end of a run where a door can swing to a wall.

Power, and the part everyone forgets

An appliance garage without outlets inside it is a cupboard. You need at least two receptacles at the back or side wall, and in most jurisdictions those need to be on a kitchen small-appliance circuit — check with your electrician, and note that some codes have specific requirements for receptacles inside cabinetry. We provide the cabinet with a knockout and a service void; the electrician runs the circuit before cabinet install and terminates after.

Two upgrades worth the money. First, a switched outlet or a smart plug so the coffee machine isn't drawing standby power behind a closed door. Second, ventilation: a kettle or espresso machine releases a surprising amount of steam, and a sealed cavity with a lacquered interior will eventually show it. We either leave the garage door open during use by habit, or build a 1-inch continuous relief gap at the top rear of the cavity, or line the interior with a laminate or metal-faced panel rather than painted MDF. On our builds the standard interior for a garage housing anything that steams is a durable low-pressure laminate — it wipes clean, it doesn't blister, and it costs less than paint.

Where to put it

The best location is the one nobody wants to give up: adjacent to the sink and the mug storage, near a route into the kitchen from outside the work zone, so someone can make coffee without standing in the cook's way. Second-best is at the end of a run where the machine can live semi-permanently.

Locations to avoid: directly beside the range (heat and grease), in a corner (the door swing collides), and above a dishwasher (steam plume on opening). Also avoid putting the garage where you actually need working counter — a 36-inch garage sits on 36 inches of counter that becomes a machine platform. If your kitchen has only 8 feet of usable counter, that's a meaningful sacrifice, and a tall pantry with a pull-out shelf might serve better.

The variations worth knowing

The full coffee station. A tall cabinet, 24 inches deep, with a pull-out worktop shelf on heavy slides, an undercounter fridge for milk, drawer storage for beans and pods, and mug storage above. The garage in a pantry. If you have a butler's pantry or scullery, put the noisy machines there and keep the main kitchen counters clean. Cheapest possible solution: the appliances just live on the pantry counter.

The lift-up mixer shelf. A spring-assisted shelf inside a base cabinet that raises a 25-lb stand mixer to counter height. Rated mechanisms handle 25 to 60 lbs; check the rating against your mixer, because a KitchenAid Pro is 30 lbs and a commercial one is more.

Cost

A 36-inch appliance garage with a bi-fold lift, laminate interior, two outlets provided for and integrated LED lighting typically adds $1,400 to $2,800 to a custom kitchen, plus the electrician's time. A tambour version is similar; a simple hinged-door version can be $600 to $1,000. A full tall coffee station with a pull-out counter and undercounter refrigeration is a $4,000 to $9,000 element. Practical takeaways

  • Measure every appliance plus operating clearance before the cabinet is drawn. Lids, levers and tilting heads decide the height.
  • 15–18 inches of interior depth. Twelve-inch uppers won't hold real machines.
  • Bi-fold lift-ups get used; tambours get admired. Choose accordingly.
  • Two outlets inside, on a proper circuit, plus a steam plan — vent gap or laminate interior.
  • Don't sacrifice your only stretch of working counter to a garage. Put it out of the cook's path.
