Vanity Lighting: Sconces vs Overhead vs Backlit Mirrors
You can spend $20,000 on a vanity and ruin it with a $40 light. Bathroom lighting is the most consequential and least considered decision in the room, and unlike almost everything else in a renovation, it is nearly impossible to fix later without opening walls. Here's how we think about it — and the dimensions we hand to electricians before rough-in.
Why overhead-only light fails
A single ceiling can or a bar fixture above the mirror puts light on the top of your head. Your brow shadows your eyes, your nose shadows your mouth, and your chin casts a shadow onto your neck. Everyone looks tired and slightly ill. Then you shave badly, apply makeup that reads wrong in daylight, and blame the mirror.
The fix is physics, not fixtures: light must come from beside the face at roughly eye level, from two directions. Everything below is about achieving that in different ways.
Sconces: the gold standard, with numbers
Two sconces flanking a mirror, one on each side, is the correct answer for most bathrooms. The dimensions:
- Centerline height: 60–66 inches above finished floor. Roughly eye level of the primary user. On a 36-inch comfort-height vanity, 66 inches is right; over a 32-inch kids' vanity, drop to 60.
- Horizontal spacing: 28–40 inches apart, or 3–6 inches out from each mirror edge. Closer than 28 inches and the light doesn't wrap the face; wider than 40 and you're lighting the wall instead of the person.
- Wall space required: 4–6 inches beside the mirror. Reserve this before sizing the vanity. The most common lighting mistake we see is a vanity built wall-to-wall, leaving nowhere for sconces at all.
- Projection: keep sconces within about 4 inches of the wall in a tight bathroom so nobody clips one with an elbow.
On a double vanity, three sconces beat four. Two mirrors with a shared center fixture gives you cleaner symmetry, better cross-lighting on both faces, and one less thing on the wall.
Choose fixtures with a diffusing shade — frosted glass, alabaster, fabric, opal acrylic. A bare exposed-filament bulb at eye level is glare, not light, no matter how beautiful the fixture is in the catalog.
Backlit mirrors: the modern default
When there is no wall for sconces — narrow powder rooms, wall-to-wall vanities, double vanities with tight geometry — a backlit or edge-lit LED mirror is the right answer, and it has quietly become our most-specified solution.
What to look for:
- Front-lit, not just back-lit. A mirror with only a glow behind it looks great in photos and lights your wall, not your face. Choose a mirror with a frosted front-lit band or a combination of front and back illumination.
- CRI 90+ and 2700–3000K. Non-negotiable. See below.
- Dimmable driver, and confirm dimmer compatibility. Cheap LED mirrors flicker or buzz on standard TRIAC dimmers.
- Integrated defogger — a thin heating pad behind the glass. Cheap, and the single most appreciated feature in a bathroom with a real shower.
- Hardwired, on a switch. Avoid touch-sensor-only controls; they fail and then you have a dead mirror. If the mirror is on a sensor, wire the circuit to a wall switch too.
Budget $500–$2,000 for a good backlit mirror. Below $300 you are buying a low-CRI panel that will make your skin look grey.
Colour temperature and CRI: the two numbers that matter
Colour temperature (Kelvin) is warmth. Colour rendering index (CRI) is accuracy. Most people get the first roughly right and ignore the second entirely.
- 2700K — warm, flattering, matches most home lighting. Our default for primary and powder baths.
- 3000K — slightly crisper. Good in a bathroom with lots of white marble or a modern palette.
- 3500K+ — clinical. Avoid unless it's a commercial restroom.
- CRI 90+ (ideally 95+, with a strong R9 red value) — this is the one people skip. A CRI 80 lamp cannot render red properly, which means skin tones, blush, lipstick and anything requiring accurate colour judgement will look wrong in the bathroom and different in daylight. It costs about 15% more and it's the difference between a mirror you trust and one you don't.
Whatever you pick, keep it consistent across sconces, mirror, ceiling, and any cabinet lighting. Mixing 2700K sconces with a 4000K mirror produces a colour cast that everyone notices and nobody can name.
Layer four: the ones people forget
A well-lit bathroom has three or four separate circuits, and the vanity is only one of them:
- Ambient / ceiling. Still needed for general light and cleaning — just not as the face light. Keep it on its own dimmer.
- Task at the vanity. Sconces or backlit mirror, as above.
- Shower / wet-location downlight. Must be a fixture rated for damp or wet locations depending on placement, and GFCI-protected.
- Night lighting. An LED strip in the toe-kick or under a floating vanity, on a motion sensor or a low dimmer, at 2200–2700K. Nobody asks for this and everybody loves it. It's the same technique we use for integrated cabinet lighting in kitchens — recessed channel, diffuser lens, no visible diode dots.
- In-cabinet and in-drawer lighting. A sensor strip inside a linen tower or the top drawer makes the storage genuinely usable at 6 a.m.
Code and safety, briefly
Bathroom lighting in North America is governed mostly by fixture location relative to water:
- Fixtures within the tub or shower zone — generally 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the rim — must be rated for damp or wet locations and be GFCI-protected.
- No hanging pendants or chandeliers within that zone. Everyone wants the chandelier over the freestanding tub; check the clearance before you order it.
- Bathroom receptacles need 20-amp GFCI protection on a dedicated branch circuit; lighting may share only under specific conditions, so most electricians run separate circuits.
- For accessible and commercial projects, the mirror's bottom edge must sit no higher than 40 inches AFF, which affects where sconces can go.
Sequencing: the part that goes wrong
Lighting decisions must be made at rough-in, which is typically weeks before the cabinetry is even built. That means you have to know your vanity height, mirror size, and mirror type before the electrician leaves. We supply dimensioned elevations with sconce centerlines, mirror outlines, and cabinet heights marked so the boxes go in the right place the first time. If you skip that step, you get sconces at 72 inches, a mirror that hits them, and a patched wall.
Choose the mirror before the electrician arrives. Choose the vanity height before the mirror. That order, every time. It's the same sequencing discipline that prevents most renovation delays.
