Integrated Cabinet Lighting: LED Done Right
There are two kinds of cabinet lighting in this world. The first is a stick-on strip from a big-box store, dangling its wire down a backsplash, glowing the blue-white of a gas station at 2 a.m. The second is light that seems to come from nowhere — a soft wash under the uppers, a glow inside the glass cabinet, a toe-kick that greets you at midnight — with no visible source, no visible wire, and no dots reflected in your countertop. The difference between them isn't the LED. It's whether the lighting was engineered into the cabinetry or stuck onto it afterward.
Lighting is the last thing most people think about and the first thing everyone notices. Here's how we do it right, and the vocabulary you need to make sure anyone building for you does too.
The numbers that matter: CCT and CRI
Two specifications decide whether your lighting flatters or insults your kitchen:
- Color temperature (CCT). Measured in kelvins. 2700K is warm lamplight; 3000K is warm-neutral and our default for most kitchens; 4000K reads clinical in a home. The non-negotiable rule: one temperature per room. A 3000K undercabinet strip beside 4000K ceiling cans makes both look wrong. We spec cabinet lighting to match the room's architectural lighting — and in wood-heavy kitchens we lean warmer, because oak and walnut come alive at 2700–3000K and go slightly gray under cool light. That interplay between light and wood tone is real; bring your finish sample to the lighting decision.
- Color rendering (CRI). How truthfully a light shows color, on a 100-point scale. Cheap strips run CRI 70-something and make food, stone, and skin look faintly embalmed. We spec CRI 90+ everywhere, and it's the upgrade you'll never identify by name but will register every single day — tomatoes look ripe, marble veining reads correctly, brass looks like brass.
The four layers of cabinet lighting
- Task: under-cabinet. The workhorse. Continuous strip or channel light mounted at the front edge of the upper cabinet — not the back, which lights your backsplash and leaves your cutting board in your own shadow. On glossy counters, bare LED strips reflect as a row of dots; the fix is an aluminum channel with a diffusing lens, which turns dots into an unbroken line of light. This is a 5-dollar-per-foot detail that separates professional from amateur installations on sight.
- Display: in-cabinet. Vertical side-mounted strips or shelf-edge lighting inside glass-front cabinets, with glass shelves so light falls through every level. The single highest-glamour move in cabinetry — especially behind the reeded glass we covered in our door insert guide.
- Ambient: above-cabinet and toe-kick. Up-light over the uppers softens the ceiling line; toe-kick light makes islands float and doubles as the world's most elegant nightlight on a motion sensor.
- Interior: drawers and pantries. Sensor-switched light inside deep drawers, pantry pull-outs, and closet wardrobes. Sounds indulgent until you've used it once; then it's oxygen. In walk-in closets, where ceiling light never reaches hanging rails, integrated rail and shelf lighting isn't a luxury at all — it's how you tell navy from black at 6:30 a.m.
The invisible half: drivers, channels, and wire paths
LED strips are 12 or 24 volt and need a driver (transformer) — and driver placement is where stick-on lighting dies and integrated lighting lives. Drivers hum when cheap, fail when overloaded, and need ventilation and service access. In our projects, driver locations are decided at the CAD stage: inside a sink base, above a tall cabinet, in a dedicated ventilated compartment — accessible, silent, and sized with 20% headroom so they run cool and last. Wire paths are machined into the cabinetry itself — channels routed before assembly, grommeted penetrations, connectors hidden in light valances. This is the point of the whole article: lighting quality is mostly a cabinetmaking problem, not an electrical one. A strip can only be as invisible as the groove that was milled for it. One coordination note that saves renovations: the electrician's part of this — outlets above cabinets for light valances, a switched feed to the right junction points, low-voltage runs before drywall closes — happens weeks before cabinetry arrives. Integrated lighting is a planning-stage decision, which is exactly when the rest of the project math from our cost guide is on the table anyway. Retrofitting "invisible" lighting into finished cabinetry is possible; it's just never quite invisible.
Controls: from a simple switch to sensors that think
Our advice runs opposite to the gadget catalogs: keep controls boring and placement brilliant. A wall switch or dimmer for task lighting (dimming is non-negotiable — full brightness for cooking, 20% for evenings); door-contact or motion sensors for interiors and pantries so light simply happens; a timer or smart plug for display cabinets if you like them glowing at dinner. Full smart-home integration is available and occasionally wonderful, but a kitchen should not require an app to make toast. The luxury is light that appears when needed and disappears when not — not a control panel.
Buyer's checklist
- CRI 90+ and a single CCT (usually 2700–3000K) across all cabinet lighting, in writing.
- Strips in diffusing aluminum channels, front-mounted under uppers. No visible dots, no visible wires anywhere.
- Named component system (Loox or equivalent) — not anonymous coils from an online marketplace, because in year eight you'll want a matching replacement part to exist.
- Driver locations shown on the cabinet drawings, accessible and ventilated.
- Dimmable task light; sensor-switched interiors; glass shelves in lit display cabinets.
