The whole room turns on one decision: the same stone runs across the island, up the splashback and along the perimeter, so the eye never meets a change of material at working height. Book-matched slabs mean the veining resolves rather than stops, which is the part that has to be planned at templating and cannot be fixed afterwards.
The cabinetry is deliberately quiet against it. A warm greige with brass knobs and a fluted drawer face on the lower run, framed doors above, and glazed uppers at each end to break what would otherwise be an unrelieved wall of tall doors.
Lighting sits under the wall cabinets and behind the splashback rather than above it, which is what makes the stone read as lit from within instead of washed from the front.
