Designing Around Existing Appliances: Yes, You Can
Somewhere along the way, "new kitchen" became shorthand for "new everything," and homeowners started apologizing to designers for wanting to keep a three-year-old refrigerator. Let me end the apologizing: keeping good appliances is not a compromise, it's frequently the smartest line in the budget. A quality appliance package runs $15,000–$50,000+, and a fridge in year three of a fifteen-year life has most of its value ahead of it. Custom cabinetry — precisely because it's custom — can be built around any appliance with the same accuracy it's built around a new one.
What keeping appliances does require is discipline about measurement and honesty about a few risks. Here's the professional version of both.
Why custom makes this easy (and stock makes it hard)
Stock cabinetry comes in fixed widths on 3-inch increments, designed around today's standard appliance sizes. Your 2014 wall oven, your European 24-inch dishwasher, your slightly-wider-than-modern range — none of them read the current catalog. With stock, odd sizes get solved with filler strips and shims, which is how you end up with a proud fridge sticking four inches past its surround and a permanent gap collecting crumbs beside the dishwasher.
Custom inverts the problem. We don't ask whether your appliance matches a cabinet; we build the cabinet to match the appliance — to the millimeter, including panels, clearances, and reveals. A well-designed surround makes a ten-year-old refrigerator look built-in and intentional. The measurements that actually matter
"It's a 30-inch fridge" is the beginning of a specification, not the end. When we design around an existing appliance, we document:
- True width, height, and depth — measured on the appliance, not recalled from the receipt. Include handles and door protrusion for depth; a "counter-depth" fridge with proud doors needs that truth in the drawings.
- Door swing and hinge clearance. Refrigerator doors need swing room to open past 90° for the crispers to pull out — a fridge boxed tight against a wall or tall cabinet on its hinge side is a daily annoyance designed in permanently.
- Ventilation requirements. Refrigerators breathe; built-in surrounds need the manufacturer's specified air gaps. Wall ovens and ranges have clearance-to-combustibles rules that govern how close cabinetry and panels can sit.
- Model number and spec sheet. Almost every appliance ever sold has an installation PDF still online. We pull it, because the manufacturer's cutout dimensions overrule everyone's tape measure.
- Condition honesty. Rattling compressor? Door that needs a hip check? Design freezes the opening; a failing appliance should be replaced before the opening is built, not after.
The one real risk — and how to handle it
Here is the honest downside of designing around an existing appliance: if it dies, its replacement may not fit the opening built for it. Appliance dimensions drift between generations — new refrigerators trend taller, some ranges deeper — and an opening cut to yesterday's model can be an inch wrong for today's.

- Design to the category, not just the unit. Where the layout allows, we size openings to the common replacement dimension for that appliance class — a 30-inch fridge opening at full standard height, even if your current unit is shorter — and close the difference with a removable filler or trim. Replacement day then means removing a strip, not remaking a cabinet.
- Age triage at design. Under 5 years old: keep without hesitation. Five to ten: keep if it's a quality brand you love, but design the opening for the successor size. Over ten and heavily used: run the math on replacing during the remodel, because appliance installation during construction is nearly free, and the same delivery crew, electrician, and plumber are already scheduled.
- The dishwasher exception. Standard 24-inch dishwashers are the most stable dimension in the industry and the cheapest disruption to absorb later. Keeping a working dishwasher is nearly risk-free. The riskiest keeps are built-in wall ovens and pro ranges, where generational drift is largest and openings are least forgiving.
Mixing old and new without visual whiplash
Many projects land in the middle: keep the fridge and dishwasher, replace the range. Three design tools keep a mixed package looking deliberate:
- Panels are the great equalizer. If your existing dishwasher or fridge accepts panels, matching cabinetry fronts erase the age difference entirely — a 2019 panel-ready appliance behind a 2026 door is a 2026 appliance to every eye in the room.
- Finish adjacency. Stainless from different years and brands varies subtly in tone and grain. Separate old and new stainless pieces across the room rather than side by side, and the variation disappears.

What it does to budget and schedule
Keeping a $12,000 appliance package pays for a meaningful upgrade somewhere else — better interior fittings, a taller pantry wall, the stone you actually wanted.
