How Custom Cabinets Are Actually Built: A Factory Tour in Words
Clients sign their contract, hear "8 to 12 weeks of production," and then... silence. From the outside it looks like nothing is happening. From the inside, your kitchen is moving through a dozen stations, touched by machines accurate to a tenth of a millimeter and by people who have sanded doors for twenty years. I want to walk you through it — the whole journey, from the file on a designer's screen to the truck at your curb — because clients who understand the process make better decisions and sleep better during the wait.
Week 0: the kitchen becomes mathematics
Before a single sheet is cut, your kitchen exists as data. The design you approved in the showroom is re-drawn as production engineering: every cabinet becomes a parts list, every part gets dimensions, edge treatments, boring patterns for hinges and shelf pins, and grain direction. This is where a custom shop earns its keep — a 613 mm-wide cabinet to swallow an awkward chase, a 2,340 mm tall unit that kisses your specific ceiling. Software checks the whole model for collisions: will that drawer clear the door handle? Does the corner pull-out sweep past the dishwasher? Every error caught here costs nothing; every error caught at install costs a week. Stations 1–2: cutting and boring, where tolerance is decided
Production starts at the panel saw or, increasingly, the CNC nesting router — a machine the size of a car that pulls parts out of 4×8 sheets the way a tailor pulls pattern pieces from cloth, optimizing yield so offcuts are minimized. The CNC then bores every hole: 35 mm hinge cups, 5 mm shelf-pin system holes, dowel positions, slide mounting points. Here's why machine boring matters more than any brochure will tell you: European hardware is adjustable within ±2 mm, so if holes wander more than that, no amount of adjustment saves the door alignment. Machine-bored at ±0.1 mm, every hinge lands where the Blum and Hettich engineering assumes it will. Hand-drilled cabinetry starts its life spending its adjustment budget on manufacturing error.
Station 3: the edgebander
Every cut edge of every panel passes through the edgebander, which glues, trims, radiuses, scrapes, and polishes a protective edge in one continuous pass — PUR adhesive or zero-joint fusion on our line, for reasons that deserve their own article (and have one: edge banding vs solid edges). A kitchen's worth of panels carries hundreds of meters of edge. This unglamorous station determines more of your kitchen's decade-ten appearance than any other machine in the building.
Stations 4–5: doors and the finishing room
Doors live a separate life from boxes. Slab doors are pressed, veneered, or machined; five-piece doors are cut, coped, and assembled with their center panels floating free to accommodate seasonal movement. Then everything enters the room that separates furniture from carpentry: finishing. Painted and lacquered fronts are sprayed in a pressurized, filtered booth — primer, sanding at 320-grit, color coats, then a catalyzed 2K topcoat baked to cure. Between every coat, human hands de-nib the surface. A door might be handled fifteen times before it's wrapped. This is also the stage that punishes shortcuts most visibly: finish applied in a dusty corner of a job site, over inadequate primer, in uncontrolled humidity, is the finish that chips at the brush-marks in year two. A factory booth is not a luxury; it's the only place a warranty-grade finish can exist. Station 6: assembly — dowels, clamps, and no visible fasteners
Boxes come together with glued dowels or hidden cam-and-dowel systems pressed in pneumatic case clamps that hold every corner square while the glue sets. Square matters more than strong: a box glued 1 mm out of square fights every door and drawer installed on it forever. Drawer boxes are built and slides mounted; hinges clip in; every door and drawer front is hung and aligned at the factory, then often removed again for safe transport. Yes — your kitchen is fully assembled once before you ever see it. That dry-fit is the quality gate: doors gapped at 2–3 mm, drawers cycled, lift mechanisms tuned to door weight.
Station 7: quality control and the wrap
Final QC checks every component against the engineering drawings under showroom-grade lighting — finish inspection is a raking-light exercise, because defects invisible under fluorescents appear instantly at a 10-degree angle. Then the counterintuitive part: everything is disassembled into its shipping logic, corners armored in foam, fronts wrapped face-to-face, hardware bagged and labeled by cabinet number. Weeks 9–12: delivery and the install that makes it architecture
Installation is production's final station, just performed in your home. Installers set and level base runs (no floor is flat; shimming a base run dead-level is half a day well spent), hang uppers on concealed adjustable brackets, rejoin fronts to boxes, and spend the final day doing what machines can't: reading reveals by eye and tuning every hinge and slide to the room. Not your cabinets sitting in a queue — your cabinets sharing a production line with the projects ahead of them, plus the unavoidable physics of the work: veneer pressing, glue curing, finish coats that must dry before sanding, five-coat systems that simply consume days.
