Bathroom Vanity Materials That Survive Humidity
A bathroom is the harshest environment in a house for cabinetry — harsher than a kitchen, and it isn't close. A kitchen sees heat and grease. A bathroom sees a daily cycle from roughly 40% relative humidity to near saturation and back, plus standing water, plus a hair dryer aimed at one specific door for ten minutes every morning. Materials that behave perfectly for thirty years in a kitchen will fail in a bathroom in five. Here's what actually survives, and why.
The engineering problem in one paragraph
Every wood-based panel absorbs and releases moisture from the air, and every panel changes dimension when it does. Particleboard swells irreversibly — the wood fibers crush against each other while wet, then don't shrink back when dry, which is why a swollen toe-kick never recovers. MDF swells more slowly but also expands at exposed edges. Plywood moves least because its cross-banded plies restrain each other. The failure is almost never through the face of a panel; it is always through an unsealed edge or a screw hole. Every decision below flows from that fact.
Cabinet boxes: what we build with
- Moisture-resistant MDF (MR-MDF / "green core"). Our default for painted vanities. It machines beautifully, holds a flawless painted surface with no telegraphing grain, and the moisture-resistant resin dramatically slows absorption. Requires every edge sealed — no exceptions.
- Marine-grade or exterior-glue plywood. The right call for wet zones, floating cabinets carrying heavy stone, and anywhere the box may see actual liquid water rather than vapour. Voids in cheap plywood are moisture highways; specify a void-free hardwood core, minimum 9-ply for ¾-inch.
- Standard particleboard / industrial-grade chipboard. Fine for a laundry cabinet, wrong for a vanity sink base. This is what nearly all retail vanities use, and it is precisely why they die at the toe-kick.
- Aluminium and polymer boxes. Genuinely waterproof, used in outdoor and spa applications. Expensive, limited aesthetically, but the correct answer for a steam-room vanity or a pool bath.

The edge is the whole game
Here is the detail that separates a thirty-year vanity from a five-year one, and it is invisible in every showroom: edge sealing on the faces you never see. The back edge against the wall, the bottom edge behind the toe-kick, the cut-out around the plumbing penetration, the underside of the sink deck. Water vapour finds those first.
What we do: 1 mm or 2 mm PUR-glued edge banding on all four edges of every panel, including the ones against the wall; sealed and primed cut-outs at every plumbing penetration; and a fully finished, sealed cabinet bottom rather than a raw panel. PUR (polyurethane reactive) adhesive matters — the older EVA hot-melt glues soften with heat and humidity, which is why cheap edge banding peels in bathrooms. Door fronts, ranked by how they handle steam
- 2K polyurethane / catalysed lacquer over MR-MDF. The best painted option. A factory-applied two-component finish cross-links chemically, producing a film that laughs at steam and cleans up with a damp cloth. Site-painted doors do not come close. Our finish types guide explains the chemistry.
- Compact laminate (solid-core HPL). Phenolic resin through the full thickness, no core to swell. Practically indestructible, water-immune, and increasingly beautiful in super-matte textures. My pick for a family bathroom that takes abuse.
- TFL / textured melamine. Thermally fused, mechanically bonded to the panel, excellent moisture performance and very good value. The whole face is sealed by definition; only the edges need attention.
- Sealed wood veneer. Beautiful and perfectly viable if the veneer is balanced (veneer on both faces of the panel so it can't cup) and fully sealed on all six sides. Unbalanced veneer in a bathroom cups within a year.
- Solid wood, five-piece frame-and-panel. Traditional and lovely, but it moves. In a bathroom, the panel shrinks in winter and reveals an unpainted line at the shoulder of the stile. We build these with pre-finished floating panels to hide the movement — see why doors warp.
- Thermofoil (vinyl-wrapped RTF). Last, and I mean last. A PVC film vacuum-pressed onto MDF, held by adhesive that softens with heat. Point a hair dryer at it every morning for three years and it delaminates at exactly that spot. Every "peeling bathroom cabinet" photo online is thermofoil. Hardware: the quiet failure point
Hinges and slides live inside the steam chamber and they are made of steel. Budget hardware uses thin electroplating that pinholes, and once it does, orange rust bleeds onto white cabinet interiors within a season. We use Blum and Hettich throughout — nickel-plated hinges tested to salt-spray standards, and LEGRABOX or AvanTech steel drawer systems with the same treatment. On coastal projects in Florida and Southern California, we upgrade to stainless-steel hinge options and marine-rated fasteners, because salt air plus bathroom humidity is a genuinely aggressive combination.
One overlooked item: fasteners. Ordinary zinc screws in an MDF sink base will corrode and lose holding power. Stainless or coated deck screws cost pennies more.
Countertops and the water path
Quartz is the bathroom champion — non-porous, and immune to the cosmetics, hair dye, and nail-polish remover that will stain natural marble in a single weekend. Porcelain slab is a close second and handles UV better in a bright bathroom. Natural marble is honest only if you accept etching and patina as a design choice. The detail that matters more than the material: seal the underside of the counter cut-out and the cabinet deck beneath it, and use a proper silicone bead at the sink rim and the backsplash. Ninety percent of "the vanity swelled" calls trace to water running down the back of the counter at the splash joint, not to steam at all.
Ventilation is a material choice too
You cannot spec your way out of a bathroom with no exhaust fan. Code minimum is 50 CFM for an intermittent fan in a typical bath, but the useful rule is 1 CFM per square foot of floor area with a minimum of 50, and 100+ CFM for a bathroom with a steam shower. Run it on a timer or humidity sensor for 20 minutes after the shower stops, not just while someone is standing in the room. A good fan protects your cabinetry more than any upgrade you can buy from us.
